The Problem

Hate is rising in Minnesota.

In Minnesota, hate crimes are on the rise. Yet official statistics severely under-count the true number of incidents. That’s because current statutes give law enforcement agencies — and law enforcement agencies alone — the discretion to track and report hate crimes in their jurisdictions.

That just doesn’t work. Many victims are afraid to file police reports. And even when they do, many departments do not accurately label those incidents as hate crimes.

In the end, another hateful episode goes uncounted, another victim goes unsupported, and the issues that caused it to occur go unaddressed.

But we can stop it.

We are on a mission to end hate in Minnesota. We imagine a future where Minnesotans aren’t just surviving but thriving.

We believe the first step to ending hate in Minnesota is accurately defining hate, counting every hateful incident, and supporting victims of hate in Minnesota.

To do that, we need comprehensive reform of our hate tracking systems, so victims can share their stories with organizations they are comfortable with, not just law enforcement.
